Welcome to Tufts, class of 2030 (or 2031 if you decided an extra year of your life spent was worth also pursuing an art degree…)! As you unpack and settle into your dorm rooms, attempt to remember the names of the 37 people you’ve had the exact same conversation with every single time, and convince yourself that you’ll definitely stay in touch with everyone from your pre-o group, it is important to remember one thing: You are already behind!
It may be tempting to focus on “enjoying college.” Unfortunately, this mindset has left countless students unprepared for the realities of the Tufts experience, where internships, networking, and housing applications begin approximately six months before conception!
Still don’t have a LinkedIn profile? Aww. That’s actually really cute. While you’re figuring out how to upload a profile picture, many of your peers have already spent years cultivating professional networks, securing internships, and developing a personal brand. Don’t worry. It’s never too late to start. Well, actually, it is…but it’s never too late to try!
No internship lined up for the summer before your junior year? Unfortunately, the job market has moved on. Recruiters are already searching for candidates for Summer 2031 and report being “a little concerned” by your lack of foresight. In today’s economy, students can no longer afford to be reactive, but rather proactive. Better luck next decade!
And if you haven’t signed a lease for housing in 2028, you may want to start familiarizing yourself with the camping regulations on Prez Lawn. Sources report that several motivated freshmen coming off the high of TWO have already placed sleeping bags there to secure prime real estate. Hope you like squirrels!
Remember: college is only four years long. By now, the students who are truly prepared have already moved on to more productive activities. Good luck catching up!
